Marina Antunes [Celluloid 04.20.10] China trailer news action

The first (and last) time I heard anything about this new John Woo feature, it was still called Reign of Swords. Now months later, we have a new title, the film is now called Reign of Assassins, and a good look at what we can expect.

The film stars the ageless Michelle Yeo as an assassin who leaves a secret society to start a new life. She falls in love, gets married to Jiang (Jung Woo-sung of The Good, The Bad, The Weird fame) and ends up on the run with her new husband when the society comes looking for her. At least I think that’s who’s looking for her, the trailer isn’t clear on the details and the detailed synopsis is a tad convoluted.

This is being sold as a John Woo film and if you don’t look closely, it would be easy to overlook the fact that he’s not actually directing this but rather producing. The film is being directed by Chao-Bin Su and the trailer does give Woo co-directing credit though I’m inclined to think that he’s more of a guide on the project and his name is being used more as a selling point than anything else.

Reign of Assassins looks very similar to other films of its ilk and that’s bound to leave a few fans disappointed but I never seem to tire of the gorgeous fight sequences and with Yeo in tow to lead the charge, I’m definitely on board; I could watch that woman in action on an endless loop.

Trailer after the break.
