[2022 Update: After our initial reporting on this in 2009, the film was actually released nearly 10 years later.]
At this point I'm not 100% sure, but it looks like this is going to be a feature length film. I'm still waiting for details from our friend D'mooN over at Opium (who gave us the heads up) to provide further details, but I can tell you that the 50 stills and pieces of concept art we have are nothing short of stunning, sort of a mixture of scifi, cyberpunk, steampunk, and Shel Silverstein (see Where the Sidewalk Ends). From what I can gather, it's possibly post apocalyptic and is about the slums of the galaxy.
Animated Film Synopsis:
Aspiring young DJ Tolik and world-renowned cellist Vladimir Chizhov meet a barefoot man on a busy Moscow street. They press a button on a peculiar apparatus and teleport to the desert planet Pluke... The animated remake of the cult feature film Kin-dza-dza tells the story of the adventures of Tolik and Uncle Vova in way that is every bit as quirky and exciting.
In the dune world of Pluke, people fall into two categories - Patsaks and Chatlanians. An ordinary match is the most precious valuable, and people are judged by the color of their pants.
Summary of the original film:
Two humans (Dyadya Vova and Skripach) accidentally found themselves on another planet after pushing the wrong button on the strange device in the hand of an odd looking alien. Planet "Plyuk" in the galaxy "Kin-Dza-Dza" looks like a desert. All the aliens look exactly like humans, and can understand Russian, because they can read thoughts, their language is limited to a few words, however. The whole paradox of Plyuk is that their civilization is much more advanced than ours in time and space traveling, weaponry and so on, but totally barbarian in the social way. There is a special (and only) way to identify two groups of creatures (something like races) by pointing a little device on the person, green light - "Chitlanin" (good), orange - "Patsak" (bad). The most valued thing on the planet is matches. Dyadya Vova and Skripach, have a long and dangerous journey in order to get home..
