While the synopsis may not be thorough, this is obviously done in a faux style as the website claims "through the freedom of information act we were able to get the tapes.." which brings me to my next question.. do the tapes of the killings hint at another film full of torture porn or is this merely filling some violent fetish? Regardless, it looks incredible, and while it is NSFW, I would recommend checking it out.
During 1987 through 1997 a serial killer terrorized the community of Beaumont, Texas. On February 28, 1997, at 9:15 AM an anonymous tip was received by the Beaumont Police Department leading them to the home of Jonathan Rainer and his wife of 19 years, Betty Rainer. In the basement of the home, Police found over 1500 videotapes documenting Rainer's life as a dedicated husband, devoted father and community leader. What the tapes also revealed would shock the world. The horrific murders of 12 victims captured by the killers camera. Through the freedom of information act Jonathan's home videos were released and assembled into a feature length film exploring the inner workings of a psychopathic killer.
Trailer after the break.

seems quite gruesome. kind of sick to give it that "real" , "authentic" touch. also why were his homevideos made into a feature film? who benefits of the film's theoretical profit?
in any case, i doubt it will be as intense, realisitc or terrifying as guinea pig:the devils experiment, which sounds somewhat similar in terms of main plot.

I don't know.. I think the footage looks spectacular, and if they edit this thing right it could be something special.. It's also a first-timer, and the hungry always put out their best material first.

I don't get these torture porn movies masquerading as horror. Porn, I get. This, I don't get. Seriously, who would be entertained by this stuff? Seeing people tortured and murdered?
Makes me wonder what kind of society we have here where porn is evil and denounced but torture is celebrated as good old fashioned entertainment. We Americans hate sex but worship violence. Makes you wonder.

Bob Doto (12 years ago) Reply
Actually I'm just the opposite. I worship sex but hate violence. However, I still think this film looks amazing. Will I watch it? Not sure if I want to infect my brain that way, however, it does look like the logical next step in the genre, and for that I'm excited.

I agree with QE in that the editing job will determine this film's lasting power.

August Underground for the suburbs?
One wonders what the point of all this is - even though the promotional material gives a weak reason of "exploring the inner workings of a serial killer," i'm not sure I buy that.
Unless this script was penned by a psychoanalyst who understands the habits and indicators of violent sociopaths.
Here's a real test for you:
read this transcript from a home video of actual serial killers.
http://pysih.com/2008/12/07/the-dnepropetrovsk-maniacs/
now watch the video, and see if you're really built to understand psychopathic acts. Because there's really nothing to get.

I wonder how people think this makes excellent entertainment, and it makes me sad that people think there's actually something to gain from movies like Abundant Sunshine (aside from lessons in technical filmmaking).

Good post Sonaboy. It should give people some perspective... or at least I would hope it does. Why anyone would want to watch, let alone praise and promote, a genre labeled as 'torture porn' is beyond me.

hope they keep their day jobs!

looks creepy and voyeuristic, the quality adds to the feeling i got. Some of the best classic horror films made were low budget. i'd check it out. I'm sick of the polished "studio indie horrors"

Gaejo (12 years ago) Reply
First off... If you have an inkling that you might hurt somebody after seeing any film in this genre, please for the sake of mankind DON'T SEE IT!
Secondly... THIS ISN'T TORTURE PORN. Learn a little about the genre, then comment. (WIKI)

I love this shit! don't get me wrong, I'm not thinking about going out and hurting people, August Underground actually disturbed me a bit because it was so real looking. But I love watch people (mostly women) scream and be tortured in a cinamatic hollywood setting. I've had the fascination since I was a kid, I remember watching Future Kick I loved it!
