Despite the untimely death of satirist, atheist, and legendary Hitchhikers creator Douglas Adams, It appears that Arthur Dent, Zaphod, Marvin the paranoid android, and the rest of the gang will live to see another absurd adventure in a 6th installment of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy called "And Another Thing..." How is this possible? Well, it would seem that Irish author Eoin Colfer of Artemis Fowl fame, has been commissioned by Douglas's estate to write the sequel for Penguin Publishing. Here is what Colfer had to say about the opportunity to step into Douglas' shoes;

"Being given the chance to write this book is like suddenly being offered the superpower of your choice. For years I have been finishing this incredible story in my head and now I have the opportunity to do it in the real world. It is a gift from the gods. So, thank you Thor and Odin."

To those of you concerned about someone else suddenly being in charge of this groundbreaking humorist series I say; don't panic. Pull out your towel, mop your brow, and consult your guide under "chill pill." Colfer is a seriously good writer and his equally absurd Artemis Fowl series is testament to his talents. Plus he's Irish so he's got that European wit that's so important to the Hitchhiker series. "And Another Thing..." is set to hit shelves in October '09. You can read the entire press release here.

I really hope that this is going to be as good as the original four (the fifth was a bit of a downer, so I'm excluding it from my mind). I read that Adams was kicking around an idea of turning the Dirk Gently novel he was working on before he died into another HHG2G book. Here's hoping a genuine effort is put forth and this isn't just going to be an attempt to cash in on his fame.

Either way I'd buy it.
