Waterworld has become something of a Voldemort to PA fans over the years. It's the "he who shall not be named" film that fans of the post-apocalyptic genre only speak about in euphemisms and need to tip-toe around at parties. "Oh you like the post-apocalyptic genre do you? Well Waterworld sucked monkey nuts." Well guess what everyone, out of all the crappy PA movies out there Waterworld still ranks somewhere in the middle in my books and certainly doesn't deserve the bad rep it's got. Sure there's some terrible scene chewing by Dennis Hopper and the whole fantasy "dry land" kiddie angle, but I totally dig Waterworld's Mad Max meets Treasure Island vibe. I'm pretty sure the tone was supposed to be more in line with swashbucklers and pirates than with nihilistic wasteland dwellers but that's just my take. Those of you who agree with me will be excited to hear that someone finally came to their senses and decided to release a 2-disc special edition DVD of the film which will contain both the theatrical cut (136 minutes) and an all new extended edition (running at 177 minutes). That's 45 more minutes of Waterworld!! The set is scheduled to street on November 4th. Thanks to Marina from Row Three for tracking this info down and not emailing me *shakes fist at sky*.

Great PA movie, waiting a long time to see the extended cut.
Has the extended cut ever been shown outside of America ?

quietearth (14 years ago) Reply
Yeah whatsup with that Marina?

As far as I know it's the first time anyone's seen an extended cut of Waterworld. I'm assuming it's been assembled for the DVD.

Just another digital avenue; sometimes things pop up on twitter before anywhere else! Who are we to understand the vast and variegated mind of Marina Antunes?
No Worries though. We love you guys.

agentorange (14 years ago) Reply
I wouldn't be surprised if a blu-ray released is announced soon.

I agree, this film is great!

TaTooKa (14 years ago) Reply
Maybe the movie was not-so-good, but that post-apocalyptic setting (water allaround, yay!) was really cool.

I was told about this years ago! Never knew if
it was true or not and how my friend got the info about a longer extended cut. Really looking forward to the release.
