quietearth [Celluloid 06.10.08] zombies movie news samurai



I asked our friend Kevin over at Nippon Cinema if he knew anything about this, and his reply was that this looks like a completely domestic production, but does that really matter to us here at Quiet Earth? Heck no! Described as "a new-age action-hybrid sushi Western loaded with bloody swordfights, crazy assassins and samurai zombies" this looks to be following in the footsteps of The Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore Police as it's supposed to have lots of blood, guts, and over the top special effects. Here's a synopsis: “It’s about a man who seeks revenge against a villain who took away his sight and slaughtered his wife and daughter. Eight years after the massacre, the blind man returns to the village as a highly trained samurai swordsman for revenge, but he doesn’t know that seven assassins await, hired by the villain and after his head." Samurai Avenger recently finished shooting and should be done by September. Check after the break for some sweet stills!

The wife and I finished a second watching of Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf. Treat to see it twice! Now it’s understood why this particular Samurai movie captured multiple awards internationally. First, it’s rich visual and emotional sword fights kept tugging my stomach, heart, and mind. In a nutshell, the opening, the tempo, the drama, the horror, the laughs, the action, the violence, the suspense, and the cast just got better and better as the movie rolled on. Those who hastily critique this movie’s shortcomings, rethink your lusterless impressions as being shrewdly placed. View the movie again, and if you cannot pick up that it’s a cautiously executed script, you’re missing the treasure chest on the boat. I want to acknowledge a cast member who (I believe) will be known worldwide within the next few years. A bold statement to come true! The lead (The Drifter), Jeffrey James Lippold instantly caught my eye when he first appeared by those trees. As his dialog and action unfold with other cast, I was awe-struck not only by Jeffrey James Lippold’s self-regulation of presence (never too domineering), but also how naturally and easily he holds the audience interest. Lippold skillfully developed The Drifter by meticulous attention to character nuances ultimately emerging as a one-of-a-kind Drifter. A peak performance! Lippold’s signature…sequel. Cannot be duplicated. All forgers prosecuted.
