Christopher Webster [Celluloid 05.02.08] movie trailer news horror thriller



The best thing about this second trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's apocalyptic thriller the Happening (besides the fact that the enchanting Zooey D. is in it) is that it finally makes the film feel like a Shyamalan film. At his best, Syamalan can take the simplest deceit and make it utterly believable. In fact, one of the reasons I think many viewers were so baffled and upset by The Village (arguably his finest achievement) is that it was such a masterstroke of manipulation by a man so completely in control of his craft that it actually insulted people. I don't buy the argument that it was an anticlimactic let down because the monster was a fabrication but rather it made us point the finger and say "how dare you toy with my emotions like that you cad!" In that sense, I sort of see Shyamalan as being less a wannabe Spielberg and more a tin-pot Hitchcock.

Just as a side note, we've been reading some stuff recently that hints that the "natural crisis" in The Happening might not be so natural after all. And that perhaps it's even government or terrorist related. Take that with a grain of salt but could it possibly hint at the twist ending we're obviously all expecting?

Awesome, hopefully be better than The Village (which was a bit of a let down I thought) and more like the excellent Signs.

Man, there's really no love for The Village is there. Granted it's no Signs but you have to admit that it was better than Lady in the Water.
