Christopher Webster [Celluloid 04.21.08] movie news scifi



Even though this is still somewhat of a rumor at this point it's being thrown around the interwebs as coming from a pretty solid source from Sony so I've made the executive decision to report on it and just cross my fingers that I won't look like a complete moron in 2 weeks when it falls through. But as it stands right now, there is a very distinct possibility that Sony is prepping a third installment of the Universal Soldier franchise (and yes it sounds like they're set on completely disregarding the horrendous made for TV Universal Soldier III: Unfinished Business). So why is that exciting you ask? Well the whispers go on to say that both Van Damme and Lundgren might once again headline the film and, if all goes well, there may even be a theatrical release in the project's future. For those of you have not put the franchise completely out of your minds, you may remember that Universal Soldier was a huge hit for Roland Emmerich before he became the king of disaster flicks. It starred the muscles from Brussels Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren as engineered super soldiers who are forced to face off when one of them begins to think outside his programming. It's a classic example of the hyper violent science fiction actioners that were prevalent in the late eighties and early nineties and is on par (if not maybe a little better) than films like Cyborg and Terminator. In fact correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the theme from The Terminator in the trailer below?
