Overview:
World War III has come and gone in a matter of minutes. Miraculously there are a small number of survivors. As they battle radiation, mutation, and each other they try to get to some sort of civilization where they might find food, shelter, and hopefully other survivors. With no real supplies they set out in this post apocalyptic comedy adventure.
The Story:
As the Fimbulvetr Astronomical Institute prepares to launch daytime aural imaging instruments into outer-space, an alarm sounds at the President of the United States of Americas secret location, activating the entire Defense Network. As the alarm sounds, a Russian Operative reports to his superior this fact and that the several location in the US around the president have gone to a "state of heightened alert". The Russians of course then raise their alert level as well.
At the same time the president orders the entire defense network to be rebooted in order to prevent him from being found in a compromising position with one of his aides. He orders the network to be rebooted to silence the alarms that are sounding because of an intruder... His aide was sneaking in to their secret meeting place to meet him for a little rendezvous.
The Chinese raise their alert level following suit. They obviously think something is up. Then a computer error at a Russian Missile watch post glitches stating that there is a less than 1% chance that a sub has launched a missile. The Russians immediately arm all of their warheads. China arms theirs right after Russia does, and then the US Defense Network comes back online. All the US knows is that Russia and China have suddenly armed all their nuclear weapons while the Defense Network was down. As per protocol the US arms all of their weapons as well, and then... Then the scientific rocket carrying equipment to space launches as it was scheduled to do. Everyone thinks that a nuclear strike has been launched and everyone then launches their arsenals. Good-bye Earth.
Miraculously there are a few survivors. Vivian and 4 other survivors attempt to make their way to a place that is not decimated by the short-lived World War III. They begin to run into deformed monstrosities and they themselves begin to change and transform. With little more then each other their adventure really begins as they trek from their sleepy little town in search of some sort or civilization.
The Rating:
Another great publication from Permuted Press. Author Marcus Alexander Hart has take the post apocalyptic genre and stirred in pop culture, geek/technology references and a healthy dose of comedy making it an original all the way. He has written some of the best character dialog I have read, not to mention his descriptions and explanations of everything our characters see, think and feel. The way Marcus crafts this world makes it so you can see it in your mind. It is so easy to get lost in this book. The only negative things I can say about this book are: One, I hated to see it end. Two, once I started this book I was unable to put it down which meant I didn't get around to doing other things I should have done. But, it was more than worth it. If you are a fan of comedy and/or the post apocalyptic genre you absolutely have to add this to your collection, and lets all hope that this becomes a movie. It is that good.
