For his follow-up to the engrossing and deservedly acclaimed The Witch (review), writer/director Robert Eggers has moved onto another tale of psychological horror: The Lighthouse.

Starring Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, it's the story of a pair of lighthouse keepers who descend into madness while on a post in a far-flung island off the coast of New England.

The really interesting thing about The Lighthouse is how different it looks from The Witch with its aspect ration and stark black and white cinematography from Jarin Blaschke who Eggers previously worked with. For all its differences, The Lighthouse does have that same eerie, manic energy to it that Eggers imbued into The Witch.

The Lighthouse premiered at Cannes earlier this year where it garnered favourable reviews and from the looks of this trailer, the press at La Croisette may have been onto something.

The Lighthouse opens October 18.
