The Vancouver International Film Festival is getting set to kick off their 37th edition. The festival, which runs September 27 to October 12, has long been a staple for Vancouver cinephiles and really, west coasters. With its two week run and multiple venues, the festival always brings an assortment of prestige titles and award winners, combined with a wide range of Canadian and local film as well as a great assortment of indie fare.

Title announcements have been trickling out over the last few weeks but with passes and ticket sales about to open, the festival has released their Special Presentation titles which includes everything from anticipated winter releases like David Lowery's upcoming The Old Man & the Gun and Jacques Audiard's The Sisters Brothers (trailer) to award winners like Pawel Pawlikowski's Cold War.

Of most interest to genre fans is this year's Altered States program which, after a strong return a few years back, has been offering up some fairly mediocre titles over the last two years. That doesn't seem to be the case this year though because the line-up is pretty impressive and includes Gaspar Noe's Climax (trailer), Lars Von Trier's The House that Jack Built (trailer), Timur Bekmambetov's Profile, David Robert Mitchell's Under the Silver Lake and Danishka Esterhazy's Level 16, notably the only film by a female director to be featured in the program.

Other titles of note in this year's festival are Joaquin Cocina and Cristobal Leon's stupendous animated feature The Wolf House which tells the story of a young woman who escapes from Colonia Dignidad, Changdong Lee's FIPRESCI Prize winner Burning starring "The Walking Dead" star Steven Yuen as well as Zhang Yimou's latest period martial arts spectacle Shadow.

Also announced have been a handful of creator talks including RZA who will be doing both a creator talk along with performing a very special live score to The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Tickets for both of those events are already on sale.
