Marina Antunes [Celluloid 07.09.18] Ireland (Republic of) drama biography

Greek writer/director, and a favourite around these parts, Yorgos Lanthimos is wasting no time following up last year's The Killing of a Sacred Deer (review) but The Favourite is a bit different than his previous projects, even if it features one of his muses, the Rachel Weisz.

A period drama set in the 18th century, The Favourite stars Olivia Colman as a somewhat unhinged Queen Anne who relies on her close friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) to rule the country in her stead. Consumed by politics and keeping the country afloat, Lady Sarah comes to rely on a new servant girl, Abigail (Emma Stone), to befriend and entertain the Queen and the new job goes to Abigail's head.

This is not your mother's period drama and though it shares some similarities to the real Queen Anne, I wouldn't rely on this for a history lesson. That said, it certainly looks like a great deal of fun.

This is the first of Lanthimos' feature films he hasn't written though you'd never guess it from the trailer. The Favourite does lack Lanthimos' trademark stilted delivery but it makes up for it in audaciousness.

The Favourite opens November 23.
