Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.09.17] thriller

When the first trailer for The Circle landed late last year, I didn't really get what the big deal was. It looked like a fairly straight forward thriller unfolding in the tech world but not being familiar with either Dave Eggers' novel or having read a long synopsis of the movie, that first trailer revealed very little of the story.

Directed by James Ponsoldt of Smashed, The Spectacular Now and End of Tour fame, the movie stars Emma Watson as an up-and-coming new employee at The Circle, an all encompassing tech company that treats its employees like family.

In the newly minted trailer which delves a bit deeper into the plot, Watson makes friends with fellow co-worker John Boyega who is convinced that the company's "always watching" mentality gives the boss Tom Hanks way too much power which could be (or maybe already is) being used for nefarious plots.

Along with Watson, Boyega and Hanks, the movie also stars Karen Gillan, Bill Paxton, Patton Oswalt and Nate Corddry.

With talk about anonymity, privacy and personal security on the rise, the questions at the centre of The Circle seem more vital than ever. I doubt the movie will bring any answers but it's likely to spark further conversation on the issues. Hopefully it manages to entertain as well.

The Circle opens April 28.
