Marina Antunes [Celluloid 12.07.15] drama western adventure

It has been a pretty great year for movies – we did, after all, get a new Mad Max movie that met nearly all expectations – and for the last few weeks, as I've started to think about my favourite titles of the year, I was sure I'd seen my favourite movie. And then I saw The Revenant.

Over the last few months, there have been numerous stories about the hardships of making this movie. The cast and crew complaints about working conditions; director Alejandro González Iñárritu's nearly maniacal pursuit for perfection in extraneous circumstances not to mention the decision to shoot the entire movie using only natural light. It doesn't matter. In time, no one will remember the complaints because The Revenant eclipses it all. It's nothing short of brilliant and from the opening sequence, I was engrossed.

The trailers so far certainly suggested good things to come but nothing could prepare me for what I saw.

A full review will be coming in the next few days but until then, here's a new teaser for The Revenant which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, a trapper guide left for dead who seeks revenge for the murder of his son.

The Revenant opens January 8.
