Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.05.14] Canada musical horror comedy

A musical horror comedy? No, it's not a joke. Stage Fright is a real movie with a plot and stars and kids and killers and music.

The entire thing unfolds at a performing arts camp where a kitchen girl with big aspirations sneaks into the audition for the summer showcase in hopes of getting some training and one day following in her dead mother's footsteps and becoming a big Broadway star. Except that as the kids prepare for the showcase, complete with kabuki masks, a crazed killer stalks the camp and starts murdering children.

Admittedly, the thought of kids horribly dying in a movie is kind of awesome in a really bizarre and recently unseen sort of way and the fact that Meat Loaf stars as the theatre teacher is really badass but I didn't laugh once throughout the trailer and I have a sneaky suspicion that the movie isn't going to play any better. Still, the concept is great and there's always the possibility that writer/director Jerome Sable will deliver a winner.

We'll find out whether Stage Fright succeeds when it lands on VOD on April 3, a release which will be followed up with a limited theatrical engagement starting May 9.
