Marina Antunes [Celluloid 02.11.14] United Kingdom comedy thriller

If you caught the early trailer for Richard Ayoade's doppelganger comedy The Double, you likely remember that trailer didn't look particularly funny. With the movie due for North American release in May, there's a new trailer kicking around but it looks like even less of a comedy now than it did before. This trailer plays it seriously. Very, very seriously; a little hard to buy considering the bad suit Jesse Eisenberg sports throughout.

Based on a novel by Dostoyevky, Eisenberg stars as a guy that is driven insane by the appearance of his doppelganger. If there are laughs to be had, I don't see even a suggestion of them here and though I'm hopeful for good things (Submarine (review) suggested Ayoade was a director with great vision), I don't expect this will top the other doppelganger drama of 2014.

The Double also stars Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Noah Taylor and James Fox and opens in the US May 9.
