I've decided to bring back news of home releases even if it kills me. Too bad the comeback had to happen on one of the weakest release weeks in recent memory. I guess no one wanted to go up against Twilight: Eclipse.
But there are a few releases that are probably worth a spin, so take note and program your viewing accordingly.
First up we've got the R1 release of Valhalla Rising (review), a moddy and surreal Viking flick from QE favourite, Nicolas Refn (Pusher, Bronson). The set is put out by MPI Video who have decided to gove it zilch for features. Too bad.
Next up we have the DVD release for Waiting for Gorgo (trailer), an 18 minute British comedy about an area of the government set up to ward off attacks from the famous film monster. I haven't seen it yet, and at only 18 minutes I'll admit it's a tough pill to swallow as a purchase, but there is apparently some extensive making of stuff that might make it worth catching up with.
Last we have The Socerer's Apprentice which I take it bombed at the box office. On one hand it's Disney. On the other Jay Baruchel is in it. On the other hand, Nic Cage is in it. But then again, Monica Bellucci is in it... ah what the hell, I'll check it out.

Ah. VALHALLA RISING is more than enough for the week though I had fun with THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE. just be prepared for some of the cheesy effects and Cage being... Well, Cage.

Valhalla Rising is very very good. Tarkovsky-like even. I would recommend the UK blu-ray for anyone that has the capabilities though.

Are there features, like a commentary on the R2 Valhalla Rising then?

The R2 has a very good directors commentary, which I found essential on my second watch. Some of the plot is a little obscure and it really helps clear up a few wtf moments.
