Marina Antunes [Celluloid 03.25.10] Portugal drama mystery

I can’t say I understand how we’re supposed to get any clues to plot from this trailer but apparently there is one (or a semblance of one). What I do know is that though I was unsure of this trailer in the opening 45 seconds, by the minute mark I was beyond intrigued, if still trying to figure out what on earth was going on (admission: I still don’t really get it).

Cinerama is Inês Oliveira’s first full length feature (a few years ago she directed a short film I’ve never seen). As for what it’s about… that’s a little more difficult to discern. Again, the trailer doesn’t hint at much of anything but there’s something about the combination of the music and camera work (not to mention the striking visuals) that have me panting to see more.

From what I can find, this is the story of Humberto a man who recently took his own life by hanging. Catarina, Paul and Victor want the company that Humberto worked for to take partial responsibility for the man’s death and in a desperate attempt to get answers, they kidnap the company’s director.

It appears that Cinerama has a few questions to answer. What did Humberto do for the company? Beyond that, what does the company itself do? Lots of mystery, obviously gorgeous cinematography and a slightly wacky looking film? I’m definitely game.

No clue if this will play outside of Portugal (it’s already played a few festivals but it’s not clear if it will play any more) but we’ll keep you posted if we find out any more.

For now, check out the trailer after the break.
